Some books are timeless. Here are four of my favourites.
CHRISTIAN BASICS by John Stott, a brilliant theologian, named as one of TIMES most influential people of the 20th century. For many years he was Rector of All Souls Langham Place, London. A tremendous conference speaker, he was renowned for his lucid exposition of Scripture. We were privileged to hear him preach in London on our visits, and you can hear him too by downloading his sermons from www.allsouls.org Click on Resources. Amazon has CHRISTIAN BASICS.
MY BROTHER’S KEEPER by Gerald B.Griffiths, a brilliant preacher, pastoring churches in Scotland, (Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh), London (Spurgeon’s Tabernacle), South Africa (Rosebank Union church, Johannesburg – my home church until I married), and at Calvary Church, Toronto. MY BROTHER’S KEEPER is a collection of sermons. The 9th one, The Bible and Modern Fiction, written mid-20th century, is just as useful for 2018 with all the movies and internet that assail us daily. I read a section of a sermon everyday as my devotional reading. Amazon has MY BROTHER’S KEEPER
KNOWING AND DOING THE WILL OF GOD by J.I.Packer. Prof Packer is a systematic theologian known for packing it in! Although being 91 now with his eyesight almost gone and unable to write, he is still fighting the good fight! British born he has been Professor of Theology at Regent College, Vancouver for many years. Like all his very many books, this is thought provoking and challenging. Each day has an excerpt from one of his books and serves as a good daily reading. I was so interested that I read the year in a couple of weeks. I could not buy it as it is out-of-print but I got 6 copies from Biblio.com.
MRS G by Mrs Griffiths: These stories will be read to you by Mrs G! They are stories for the children that parents will also enjoy!
BIBLE STORIES ALIVE by Kitty Anna Griffiths, an English high school teacher, who became famous for her bible stories and had a word-wide ministry of many millions for 46 years. And her ministry continues, although she is in heaven! They are available in lots of languages and are really wonderful – can be enjoyed by “children” 3-103! She was a philanthropist, building and equipping a children’s wing in a hospital and running an out- patients feeding scheme at a mission hospital, both in South Africa. She was married to Gerald Griffiths (above) and they had 3 children, 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. See www.biblestoriesalive.org Go to iTunes and click on Kitty Anna Griffiths.
God bless your reading
