Coveting was the original sin. When the devil came to Eve, he made her want something that appeared very desirable. Desire of itself is not a sin. It depends on what we desire and if it would meet with God’s approval. Although God had forbidden her to do it, Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Since then everyone has broken this commandment. You might not covet his ox or ass, but perhaps his new laptop or her designer dress…One has only to watch toddlers fighting over a toy to realize how early this sin sets in!
Then, of course, coveting might involve breaking more than one commandment. It might include “You shall not steal” or “You shall not commit adultery.”
On a national level, coveting has started many wars. Tragically the world today is in turmoil, and one can only feel the end of the age is coming.
However, for ourselves, by God’s grace through our Lord Jesus Christ, we can be forgiven for the results of what we have coveted. We can have a new start.
God bless you
